50-hour Certificate Programs

Chinese Therapeutic MovementTherapeutic Tai Chi

Certificate in Chinese Therapeutic Movement (CTM 1)

Explore three key pillars of Chinese medicine for health and well-being.  Simple, hands-on lessons integrate therapeutic exercise (Tai Chi, Qigong, and Daoyin), acupressure (Anmo), and assisted mobilizations (Tuina) to experience the deep structure of the body from the perspective of traditional Chinese medicine.

The Chinese Therapeutic Movement certification series consists of 10 workshops offered one Saturday a month over the course of a year. Written material and online review videos are included. For participants working toward certification, competencies will also be offered online. Upon completion of all 10 CTM workshops, a 50-hour certificate will be issued.

Beginners will gain:
● practical self-treatment strategies for your health and well-being
● an experiential introduction to traditional Chinese medicine
● competency at teaching a variety of foundation exercises

Movement instructors will gain:
● new exercises easily integrated into a variety of practices and classes
● new body maps to help improve student performance and understanding
● simple strategies for adapting exercises to individual needs and challenges

Bodyworkers will gain:
● gentle range of motion and release techniques
● improved body mechanics and self-care to support your work
● integrated exercise recommendations for clients

Chinese medicine practitioners will gain:
● additional modalities that complement acupuncture and moxibustion
● seamless integration with TCM treatment principles
● practical embodiment of your understanding of qi, channels, and organs

Workshops can be taken individually, though there is a discount for the complete series. Ten 5-hour days are sequenced progressively, beginning in September, but are not required to be taken in order. In each class, emphasis is placed on perceiving, understanding, and guiding qi for specific therapeutic benefit.

The CTM Certification series is 10 five-hour individual workshop days, paid over the course of the year ($800 total) or by a single full-program tuition discounted rate ($700). Look under “Workshops” in the navigation bar at the top of the page to register for individual days.

For participants who have already enrolled in one full workshop day ($80), this tuition can be applied to the yearly discounted package ($620). Full-program participants who miss a workshop day (with 48 hrs notice) can make it up the next time the same class is offered, at no extra charge.

Certificate in Therapeutic Tai Chi (CTM 2)

You don’t need dozens of movements, hours of time, or acres of room to enjoy the health benefits of Tai Chi—even a few minutes exploration a day can inspire a deeper experience of both inner balance and the world at your fingertips.

Therapeutic Tai Chi (CTM 2) builds directly upon the Chinese Therapeutic Movement (CTM 1) series to develop an art of strength, agility, and connection to your environment—a core aspect of health. Tai Chi is widely recognized for its benefits to balance, muscle tone, bone health, respiration, mental acuity, and relief from chronic stress. However, Tai Chi is also an art of practical movement and can inform just about every task and activity, from a relaxing walk to catching a unexpected door swinging shut.

Workshops continue to explore a variety of strategies: 1) developing the planes of soft tissue activation that unify the body head-to-toe-to-fingertips, 2) exploring the channel-organ system model of Chinese medicine, and 3) the hands-on skills we began to develop through assisted range of motion with a partner.

In each workshop, participants will learn:

● foundation exercises that inform more complex Tai Chi coordinations
● the sophisticated positionings (internal and external) of classical Tai Chi movements
● adaptive variations of Tai Chi movements to meet individual goals and needs
● partnered exercises to develop sensitivity, understanding, relaxed strength and agility

Each class will emphasize awareness, understanding, and internal integration over external choreography. Even a single Tai Chi movement offers a wealth of opportunities for transforming your experience of your body and interaction with your environment. We will discuss how external form should be adapted to meet individual needs. Written material and online review videos are included.

The Therapeutic Tai Chi Certification series is 10 five-hour workshop days, paid over the course of the year ($800 total) or by a single full-program tuition discounted rate ($700). Upon completion of all 10 CTM workshops, a 50-hour certificate will be issued. Important notice: the Therapeutic Tai Chi (CTM2) certificate is intended to be taken following (or, in some cases, alongside) the Chinese Therapeutic Movement (CTM 1) series. Please do not register for the complete Therapeutic Tai Chi certificate without any prerequisite. Individual workshops (not for certification) can be taken in any order.
